What line type and strength should a first-season shore angler use?
Spool a spinning reel with 10-pound braid. Add an 8- to 12-pound fluorocarbon leader: 8-pound in clear, open water, 10-pound as the default, and 12-pound near rock, wood, or sparse grass.
Why this line system works
Tyler Berger puts 10-pound braid on his spinning reels, then changes only the fluorocarbon leader. His leader range runs from 8 to 15 pounds across finesse presentations. That leaves the main spool alone while the short section nearest the bait changes with the water and cover.
For a first-season shore setup, three leader strengths cover the useful part of that range. Start at 10 pounds. Drop to 8 in clear, open water. Move to 12 around rock, wood, or sparse grass. Heavy vegetation calls for a different setup rather than a thicker and thicker leader on the same medium spinning rod.

Seaguar describes its bass leader as resistant to abrasion around the same cover in the table and as hard to see underwater. That is manufacturer guidance about its material. It does not establish that bass bite it more often or that one brand lasts longer.
What we do not know
We have not measured the breaking strength, knot strength, visibility, or casting distance of any line. Berger’s 10-pound braid and 8- to 15-pound leader are a practitioner’s system. The three-row selector is our narrower starting point for a beginner, not a controlled comparison.

Leave the 10-pound braid on the reel. Tie on a 10-pound leader, fish it until the end is nicked or too short, and change only the leader when the cover changes.
